WELCOME TO OUR HEBREW SCHOOL—The Jewish Learning Center (JLC)

The Shema contains a passage instructing us to remember the commandments and “teach them diligently to your children.” At Congregation B’nai Sholom – Beth David, that responsibility is carried out by our Jewish Learning Center (JLC), which offers programs for children from pre-K – Grade 7.

We believe Jewish learning is about more than preparing children to become Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We welcome families from all backgrounds, denominations and religious upbringings.

The curriculum combines instruction in prayer, Hebrew literature and language, the Bible, Jewish history, Jewish holidays, and lessons on the Holocaust. Students receive a high-quality, differentiated education in a departmentalized setting that meets the needs of all learners.

Our pre-K – Grade 1-2 classes meet from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Sundays. Grades 3 – 7 meet from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 9 a.m. – 12 noon Sundays. Holding class two days a week rather than three is a great convenience for busy parents.

Come and take a tour to see our rich educational environment. Contact Principal Rabbi Dr. Boaz Tomsky at HebrewSchool@gmail.com for additional information.

Meet Our Shin Shin

Our Shin Shin for the 2024-2025 school year is 18 year-old Shai Edwy. We share her with two”Y’s”  and two other conservative temples on Long Island. She is a high school graduate who committed to a year in the U.S. as an Israeli ambassador to teach Jewish children about her homeland before she joins the IDF when she returns home in August 2025. Here is Shai in her own words:

“Hi everyone!

My name is Shai. I live in Kfar HaOranim. It is very close to Modi’in. I live with my mom, dad and my younger brother.

We are a very close family, we like to laugh and play board games together.

In my free time I like to meet with my friends, listen to music and watch TV. I love the theater, acting on stage and seeing plays.

I also like watching basketball and I support the Israeli basketball team Hapoel Holon.

Last year I left my youth movement after 8 years which in 3 of them I was a counselor, in my first year I was with all ages, in my second year with 6th graders, and in my third with 3rd graders.

I am extremely excited for the beginning of the Shlichut! I think we are going to have a learning and enjoyable experience together and I am looking forward to meeting the community and mostly the children of the community. I am already thinking about ideas for activities. I wish us a great year together and I am looking forward to see you all soon!”

Every third week, Shai attends a Shabbat service at CBS-BD where she addresses the congregation and informs them about what is happening in Israel, from an insider’s point of view.

On coming to the U.S., her biggest fear was that she wouldn’t feel at home, that it would be hard to be accepted. She is grateful that “people have been welcoming to me” and have even included her in their family gatherings. “I want to wish everyone a great year and I’m looking forward to getting to know them more.”
